Harvest HayDay by Daylight / Diamonds & Denim by Moonlight

Shine on harvest moon! The full moon nearest to the equinox in autumn is often called the harvest moon since it appears when farmers are enjoying the fruits of their harvest. In keeping with this season, The Elizabethan Gardens invites you to celebrate the season by daylight and by moonlight.

“The Gardens is the perfect place to enjoy the crisp fall weather,” touted Executive Director Carl Curnutte. “Our Harvest Hayday on Saturday, October 27 from 10am-1pm and the Diamonds & Denim dinner dance at 6:30pm are two reasons to come to Manteo. It’s going to be a great time with lots of memories made.”

For Harvest Hayday, the Great Lawn will be the sight of a plethora of autumn activity. Guests can enjoy all-American hayrides, a pumpkin hoop toss, stuff a scarecrow, face painting, storytime, mask making, horse rides, corn hole as well as make and take crafts. Home baked goods accompanied by apple cider make a yummy addition to the fun. Other entertainment includes the fine fiddling of Club Violin, an apple roll, prize and treat packed pumpkin piñata swing, a fire pit to roast marshmallows, and a find the garden gnomes game.

Harvest Hayday coincides with a sculpture exhibit by Allan Weaver in Odom Hall titled, “The Muses.” Standard garden entrance fees apply for Harvest Hayday, which also allows you inside to see Weaver’s fascinating exhibit. However, members of The Elizabethan Gardens are admitted free.

And as the sun sets and the moon rises, be sure to return to Roanoke Island’s north end and join The Gardens at The North Carolina Aquarium for their Diamonds & Denim fundraising dinner dance. But leave your suit at the cleaners. For this event you’ll need your all-American denim, with an added touch of sparkle if you care, and you’ll be right at home for Diamonds & Denim held from 6:30 – 11pm.

“Think fire-roasted vegetables, open-flame cooked meats and desserts like pumpkin pie and spice cake for this non-traditional gala event,” remarked Penny Rose Chairman of The Board of Governors. “Our planning committee is very excited about the theme. We had great success last year and have looked forward to this evening ever since. So kick up a little hay and have a great time while you support The Gardens.”

Along with hearty fall fare, The Gardens hopes your dancing feet will move to the beat as you swing about to see the items up for bid in the silent and live auctions.

The harvest-themed day is certainly ripe with play – harvest fun by day, and dinner/dance by night. Entrance fees apply for Harvest Hayday, however, members of The Elizabethan Gardens are admitted free. Non-members tickets are: Adults $8. Youth (6-17rs) $5. Children age 5 and under free with a paying adult. Refreshments and bake sale items will be available.

Individual tickets for Diamonds and Denim are $65 each. Tickets are available by contacting The Gardens at 252-473-3234. Donations for the silent and live auctions are also welcome. For info or details, call 252-473-3234 or visit www.elizabethangardens.org.
