Arbor Day

Arbor, which is Latin for “Tree,” is an environmental holiday where citizens and groups are encouraged to plant trees and care for the already existing trees. Arbor Day was founded by J. Sterling Morton on April 10th, 1872 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, United States where over an estimated one million trees were planted on that single day. Come join us in the Gardens with coffee and donuts and discussion of our tree collection. You can help our Garden Staff in planting trees in the Gardens. Learn how to plant trees and what will make a healthy tree grow. Free program with admission.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The classic event of the genteel south comes to The Elizabethan Gardens. Dress in style and enjoy the revels and embellishments of the race at this fundraising extravaganza that benefits three Outer Bank non-profits: The Elizabethan Gardens, Beach Food Pantry and Dare Education Foundation. Sponsored by Outer Banks Blue Realty. Expect a traditional southern affair with mint juleps, live and silent auctions, sumptuous derby pie, a hat contests and an assortment of live music, games and entertainment as you enjoy the beautiful gardens and anticipate the big race to be broadcast live. For tickets, call 252-473-3234.

The event will take place on the Great Lawn.

Before the big race, attendees can also enjoy:

  • Silent auction
  • Fashionable hat auction with hats “fashionably” styled by local businesses (the hat designers bringing in the highest bid will win a floating trophy and be automatically welcomed as VIP guests at the 2018 derby)
  • A Derby Hat Contest for party attendees (categories include Most Creative, Most Colorful and Best Overall)

A live auction and award ceremony to announce the winners of these contest will be held before the big race.

AND OF COURSE, THE’RE’S THE DERBY RACE, streamed live on large screens.

Place bet’s on the winning stallion with our derby “Horse Bucks.” Winners will receive a variety of prizes based on their luck in the race.

About the Beach Food Pantry

We exist to provide free groceries to individuals and families in our community who have been affected by a temporary crisis or emergency. We offer hope to the estimated 4,370 people in Dare County who are food insecure – 1,470 of whom are children. And, we offer our commitment – to every Dare County resident – that we will be prepared to do our part should our Outer Banks community ever be affected by a natural event.

Funds from this event will support The Elizabethan Gardens and Outer Banks SPCA (OBSPCA).

Block Planting Workshop

Similar to mosaic planting block planting is a detailed and precise method of setting up a bed of seasonal annual. The difference is that block planting is a method of planting to create a full and precise planting scheme that can be viewed from many angles. Now that the ground temperatures have warmed enough it is time to design and install the detailed mosaic plantings of summer annuals. Join us to learn how to develop detailed and precise planting schemes of summer annuals that make up seasonal mosaic gardens. Pruning Azaleas Workshop

By now the Azaleas are finished with their blooming cycle and are starting the summer growth. This is the time to prune Azaleas, unlike other shrubs; Azaleas need to be pruned right after they flower.
