The following workshops and classes are planned for 2016 in The Gardens. Classes are subject to change base on class size and availability. Saturday, March 12 – Cheese It Up, 12pm-2pm

Enjoy wine and cheese as you create a one-of-a-kind take home summer container garden with Carl Curnutte and friends. Create a uniquely perfect planter – sure to be the conversation of the party and also discover the art of matching cheese with wine, to further impress at your next cocktail party.  Members/Friends: $45. Saturday, April 9 – Salad Container Gardening, 11am – 1pm

Lettuce show you how to plant and enjoy a fresh salad in a space-saving container! The Gardens will supply the containers, soil and plants for your garden to get started. And to taste what is yet to come from your own garden, a fresh salad will be served for lunch to all participants. This workshop has been a big hit and will fill quickly.  May 4- Sept. 21 – Yoga in the Gardens,   9am-10:30 am

The Elizabethans were fascinated with the exotic, especially the orient. Their gardening style expressed their delight in taming the wilderness which makes Yoga in The Elizabethan Gardens a natural fit sine the goal of practicing Yoga is to learn to control or tame the body physically and mentally. Unlike the Elizabethans, we aren’t worried about the Black Death or Bubonic Plague, but the silent plague of inactivity has spawned countless get off the couch and get moving programs. We know we should move more and why not start with Yoga in the tranquil setting of The Elizabethan Gardens? Beginning June 17 at 9am, The Gardens will host Yoga with instructor Chelsea Quattrone on the Great Lawn. The 90 minute class is open to the general public for a fee of $15.00 per person Non-Members and $10.00 for Members. Participants can arrive as early as 8:30am. Classes run each Wednesday May 4- Sept. 21 and is subject to weather-related cancellations. Sign up today for Yoga by calling 252-473-3234.

 

Saturday, May 7 – Twenty Great Shade Perennials for the South, 10 am-Noon

Enjoy this workshop all about twenty shade-loving perennials that flourish at The Elizabethan Gardens. Our Garden staff will educate you on shade plants and how to get them to grow. A walk afterwards in the Gardens will allow you to view these plants and learn more hands on details about them. Members $10, and Non-Members $15. Saturday, May 14 – Gardening Workshop: “Cloning with Quentin, ” 10am-12pm

Local living legend, Quentin Bell, will show you the proper techniques for propagation. Mr. Bell grew up on The Roanoke Island Nursery and his family has been involved with The Gardens since its inception. Our garden staff will provide cuttings of shrubs, trays and soil. Mr. Bell will provide his talents and techniques! This workshop is great for grandparents to do with grandchildren. Members/Friends: $15. Saturday, Sept. 3  – Techniques and Tips for Plant Propagation at Home, 12pm-2pm

This hands-on class will teach the participant how to propagate a variety of annuals, perennials and shrubs in the comfort of their own backyard. Workshop includes admission. Members: $25; Non-Members: $30. For tickets or more information, call 252-473-3234.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Sept 12, 13 & 14 – Botanical Watercolor:  Fall Studio Workshop, 9:30am-3:30pm

Linda Miller, Resident Botanical Artist at The Elizabethan Gardens, inspires participants to see, preserve and interpret the beauty of the garden during this unique workshop. The first day begins with a thirty-minute program about botanical art and a walking tour of the gardens to gather specimens. Artists will delight in Miller’s vested interest and skill in capturing the botanical world in watercolor and her ability to impart this mastery with the class. This two-day workshop is open to all artists – beginner to advanced, with optional third day. Price includes admission to The Gardens. Two-Day Class: Members/Friends, $100; Non-Members, $120.  Tuesday, November 8 – Art of Candy Making,  6-pm- 9pm

 Get a jump on the season. Join this delicious workshop to learn how to make sumptuous holiday candies from scratch: peanut butter cups, turtles, bourbon balls and nut clusters. Each participate will take home a dozen of each candy so please bring containers for packing your creations. Experienced instructors will share their techniques and for making beautiful holiday candies. Arrive dressed for candy making and decorating. Class size limited to 20. Decorate your home for the holidays with an elegant centerpiece that is uniquely yours! An Instructor will share with you their skills. The Elizabethan Gardens will provide the base, greening pins and cuttings. Participants may choose to bring ribbon, ornaments or items from home. Class size is limited to 25 participants.  Tuesday, December 13 – The Art of Centerpieces, 5pm-8pm

Enjoy dinner and create something beautiful at the same time. Come on you deserve a break—enjoy the holidays. The Elizabethan Gardens is located adjacent to The Lost Colony's Waterside Theatre and Fort Raleigh National Historic Park on Roanoke Island nestled near North Carolina's Outer Banks. The gardens are open year-round, seven days a week except certain holidays.
