Chocolate Craving

Chocolate Craving! – Craving a weekend filled with chocolate? Treat yourself and the family to yummy samples and hands on chocolate candy making training. Join this delicious workshop to learn how to make sumptuous chocolate candies from scratch: peanut butter cups, turtles, million-dollar nuggets and nut clusters. Each participate will take home a dozen of each candy so please bring containers for packing your creations. Experienced instructors will share their techniques and for making beautiful candies. Savory Cooking Workshop

A cooking with herbs workshop. Savor and sizzle at The Gardens. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner this workshop is ideally suited to bring romance and spice to your palate. Join us as an Outer Banks chef prepares some tasty treats. Come with your taste buds ready to sample their creations. Workshop includes a visit to the greenhouses and admission to The Gardens. Aspects of Pruning

Limit 12

This will be a hands-on, intensive pruning workshop. Join us to learn about Langerstroemia indica, Crepe Myrtle and pruning techniques. Langerstroemia is a genus of around 50 species, native mostly to India, also called Queen of Flowers. February 25

Hands on Pruning

Limit 12

This workshop will include hands on fieldwork, and a discussion of the different culture techniques of Hydrangeas. Hydrangea is a genus of 70-75 species of flowering shrubs, and climbers native to Asia. The cultivated varieties are primarily deciduous shrubs that flower on new wood in the summer. Cheese it Up

Enjoy wine and cheese as you create a one-of-a-kind take home summer container garden with Carl Curnutte and friends. Spring Annuals Planting

The winter chill is starting to subside. Now it’s time to get out into the garden set up beds, and plant Spring annuals. Butterfly Garden

As the warmer weather approaches our garden friends begin to return. The Elizabethan Gardens will be offering a workshop in the setting up of a butterfly garden. Mini Succulent Gardens Workshop

Join us at the Elizabethan Gardens for a discussion on succulents and the creation of your own succulent garden. Succulent plants refer to those in the families of sempervivums, sedums, aloes, kalanchoes, echeverias, and other fleshy leaved species. Easy to grow, succulents evolved in some of the toughest places on earth, and are actually at their best when grown in hot sun and poor soil. Hello Hostas

Hostas are one of the most versatile and diverse additions to any garden. Join us for an informative discussion all about hostas. Learn about which ones are best suited to the difficult climate and conditions on the Outer Banks, those to avoid and how best to care for them. Compost!

Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed and recycled as a fertilizer and soil amendment. Compost is the most important component in organic farming. We will discuss the dos and don’ts of setting up your own composting area and its benefits in the garden. Come join us at The Elizabethan Gardens for this hands on discussion. Mosaic Planting I

Mosaic Planting II

Mosaic gardening/planting is the method of creating a precise planting scheme to achieve a specific shape. The Elizabethan Gardens will be offering two advanced workshops that will involve laying out the intricate design of summer annuals in the courtyard. These will be limited to six per workshop. Air Plant Wall Garden Workshop

1pm-3pm

$40 for members. $55 for not-yet members.

Limit 12

Join us at the Elizabethan Gardens for a discussion on air plants and the creation of your own vertical air plant garden. Supplies include a designer wall garden container and plants for you to arrange and take to your home. There are more than 650 types of air plants in the genus Tillandsia that can grow and thrive without soil. These Bromeliads capture all of the water and nutrients that they need trough their specialized leaves. Bromeliads can grow as Epiphytes, Lythophytes, and as Terrestrials. They are native to the Southern US, Mexico, Central and South America, and are warm weather plants that need virtually no care. Limited to 12 participants. Block Planting

Block planting, like its cousin Mosaic planting, is a method of garden design that is precise in its layout. Unlike Mosaic planting schemes which create shapes of different colors, block planting’s end goal is to create a solid, full look. Container Gardening

Creating a container garden allows for easier control of the soil, light, water, and fertilizer.

May 10

Re-Open the Gates Ribbon Cutting

4:30pm-6:30pm

Admission Required.

Join us as we celebrate the return of our Great Gates- recently restored to provide decades of service to The Elizabethan Gardens. These Gates once hung at the French Embassy in Washington DC and were given to the gardens as a gift. Years of wear and the Outer Banks environment damaged the historic iron. With assistance from the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Outer Banks Community Foundation and our patrons we have been able to restore these iconic symbols of our gardens. Join us for fanfare and refreshments to celebrate the gates.

Pruning Boxwoods

Small Garden, Big Design

Have a small space you want to make a great? This presentation is designed to help gardeners make the most of a small space, but can also be of help to gardeners with larger properties who are at a loss as to how to begin their garden design by using garden vignettes.  You’ll learn how think in terms of container garden groupings, vertical gardening and make a visit to the plant sale area to see first-hand how to “build” your garden when buying plants. Herbs, Herbs, Herbs

Join us at the Elizabethan Garden’s Greenhouse for hands on discussion of the many techniques of growing herbs and their uses. As a general description, herbs are any plant used for food, flavoring, medicine, or fragrances for their savory or aromatic properties. The distinguishing factor between herbs and spices are that herbs are the leafy parts of a plant, whereas spices are produced from other parts of a plant such as seeds, bark, and roots. Plant a Tree, or Two

September is a great time to plant trees and woody shrubs. This allows them time to become well established by the time the cold winter winds return. Christmas Cactus
